Step 1 I never use staffing firms
Most, not all staffing firms are in the business of making money. They charge too much and its not really beneficial for the developer. This creates a bias to good work. Also I've found in the rails community developers don't go to job boards and staffing firms, or at least not the ones that really care about programming. My type of rails developer doesn't use the corporate prescription for staffing.
Step 2 Experience and GPA's are BULLSHIT
Why? If it takes someone 9 years to learn something, I don't want them on my team. I prefer exposure, it's different from experience. If someone's interested in something more than likely they have been exposed. If someone has been doing something for 30 years that doesn't necessarily mean they've been doing it right. I pose the question, if experience is so important why do people that start off at the same level at the same time end up in different places? When I was in school people cheated. Good guys finish last hands down and thats why GPA's are just as worthless as experience.
The truth about references
How about references? Would you tell someone to give you a bad reference? My point exactly.
My criteria
I believe that good work will be recognized. I have bills like everyone else but I genuinely love doing this. I want someone that feels the same. I look for those that choose programming over the money.
Idea and Perspective
The next important thing is ideas and previous work. This is why experience is bullshit: You need experience for the job and to get the job you need experience and entry level positions are "full" of it. You really don't get "Experience" you need. Thats why I look at passion, drive to be better, character, and ideas. I think you can really tell a lot about a person that has great ideas even if they are unorganized. Ive seen people that put a lot of thought into things usually put that much thought or more into other aspects of work too. These black sheep are the innovators that give us the modern conveniences that we have to day.
